Students flocking the theatre

For those who thought theatre was for the old and the elite in Kenya couldn’t be more wrong. This is as a result of the ‘buy one get one free’ Thursday students offer running at the Phoenix players in Nairobi.

The pioneer program which was introduced by the management of phoenix is meant to bring the youth back to theatre to enjoy a culture that has been in existence for years before film came to existence.

“The offer was a gamble which to our surprise has readily gained acceptance by the Undergraduates in Nairobi. ” Said the Phoenix players managing director Millicent Ogutu.

The students are being treated to a variety of wholesome entertainment ranging from local comedies, drama and thrillers.

Benson Nyaga a student at a local University and a first timer at phoenix players said that “The show is alive, real and passionate. I felt like I was part of the action”

Daniel his friend claimed that the student offer was the best entertainment bargain he ever got.

Millicent explained that repertory theatre is more than an art, but a form of entertainment that engages the mind in thought while passing cultural value to the young generation that is Kenya’s future.

She said that the theatre shows at Phoenix offer its audience something to laugh about, something to cry about and something to think about and now students could be part of this tradition at very affordable prices.

“The youth have been neglected by today’s society and it’s our collective responsibility to ensure that they are set on the right path by showing them what’s right and what’s not.” Explained Millicent. “We invite the corporate world to join us in this social responsibility, to be able reach more youth and to make Kenya a better place for the generations to come.”
